about

The 6th track on our first Hats Off Gentlemen It's Adequate album was 'Wait For The Storm'. It's another bleak one I'm afraid. It's about knowing that something horrible medical is coming, and there's nothing much you can do about it.

It is a fairly acoustic/folky song, although with gentle drums and a little bit of electric guitar. The track has some lovely flute from Kathryn Thomas. I like the guitar sounds on the track.

In terms of structure, it is basically verses alternating with instrumental bits.

The song has a particular emotional significance for me in that it was my dad's favourite of my songs. He loved folk music, and that side of my influence probably came from hearing what he was listening to as I was growing up. He specifically asked for this song to be played at his funeral (he knew that he was dying of cancer and the lyrics reminded him of the sense of waiting for the storm to hit without being able to do anything about, it after a dose of chemotherapy).

Song note by Malcolm Galloway

"Wait For The Storm is once again hauntingly flute laden and a superb example of how to use instruments, levels and lyric in harmony to make a powerful imagery." Indie Bands Blog

lyrics

"Dark clouds on the horizon
Black clouds touch the sea
Glass winds blow me closer
But I'm going nowhere

Dark clouds on the horizon
Staring out across the sea
The rising wind might blow me away
But what could I do but wait for the storm

As the first drops dissolve me
And the rain starts to wash through me
As I watch my body draining
What could I do
But wait for the storm

With each breath coming nearer
I pretend it's reaching out to me
I hold my hands
To keep me down
And what could I do, but wait for the storm"
