My great-grandmother, Broni Krom was a refugee. She was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, and fled to Riga to escape from anti-Semitic pogroms. She then moved to Moscow to train as a seamstress and became a court dressmaker. In 1914 she married the Ukrainian Alexander Kholodenko. His family sent them tickets to start a new life in Philadelphia, however before they could get to the ship, The First World War broke out, stranding them in Paris. Alexander volunteered for the French army and was killed in the Pas De Calais in 1915. Broni was pregnant with my grandmother at the time.

In Paris she worked making costumes for the opera and ballet. Her daughter was on a university student exchange programme in Canada when the Second World War erupted. She escaped to the Pyrenees, where local people risked their own lives to shelter her in the attic of a barn. She made and repaired clothes for the village that protected her.

I wish I knew more about her story. When I was growing up she never mentioned her past, and it never occurred to me to ask until it was too late. Despite what must have been terrifying experiences of being repeatedly hunted by people who wanted to kill her because of her origins, she retained her compassion and decency throughout her life, and always seemed cheerful.

This piece aims to loosely follow her experiences as a refugee - her childhood, her journey to Moscow, the first experience of a big city, meeting her husband, travelling to Paris, working for the opera, the invasion of France, escaping to the Pyrenees, and then the liberation. I hope she would have liked it.
