"We don’t talk about the road anymore. When I was younger it felt too dangerous, but now it’s just something you don’t do. The taboo has become internal – it no longer occurs to us to mention it.

I only have distant memories of people being burned for preferring one version or the other. Who killed who varied. Some believed the road goes on forever, just endless repeating units of homes, shops and workplaces, over and over. Others believed that if you went far enough you’d come back to where you started. I suppose some people must still believe one way or the other, but we don’t mention it. Nor do we ask why one road, why not two, four, or infinity? Or where the stuff in the shops comes from, or where our waste goes, or what is outside our road. You wouldn’t get killed for it these days, but it would just be rude. So everyone’s happy, and nobody needs to burn. Except of course I want to know.

I’ve never heard of anyone else who’d travelled. I mean really travelled. We might go one or two units one way or the other for social reasons, but that’s about it. I’ve been six, which marks me out as a bit weird. Everything I’ve seen so far has been all the same, so I can understand why it seems pointless.

If the road is endless, I won’t be able to prove it. No matter how many I see, the next unit could be different. However if it does loop, and if the loop is short enough for me to walk, then I will know.

So I discretely carved my initials at the bottom left of my doorway, turned, and walked.

Time passed.

I’ve been walking for such along time. Sleeping in doorways and begging for food. Last night I found a set of initials cut into a doorway. They might be mine. I don't know. I wish I could remember my name."

There were rumours there was an end of the line
Somewhere where the single row of homes and shops and workspaces stop
An end suggests an outside
Something better left unspoken
We don’t ask anymore
A loop or a line?

There’s only one way to know
To walk to the end
There's only one way to go
Just keep walking till I find, find out if I’ll cross my path again

I’d never met anyone who’s travelled
What’s the point when the all blocks repeat?
We used to burn the loopers or the liners
but now we are more discreet

I walked and walked and I saw
Someone’s name scratched on the side of a door
I didn’t recognise the name
But I’ve been walking such a long time.
I can’t quite remember
what I used to be called
